Stories to Guide You

As an anxious little kid, books were a safe place for me. I could fall down the rabbit hole or travel by cyclone to new worlds where I could learn about different parts of myself and see myself as something other than anxious. I learned being different was ok. I’ve always found stories inspiring and have learned best through story as context. Do you have to be a big reader to work with me? Absolutely not! But if you are, here are some books that are both clinical and non-clinical that you may find helpful. In these books you’ll learn the foundations of the approaches I use and it is my hope that you’ll find inspiration and hope.

The Power Of Vulnerability By Brene Brown

The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown

Ok, so this one is an audiobook. I listen to it at least once a year for an emotional “reset”. This is a 6 hour course presented in front of a live audience where through the power of story, Dr. Brené Brown teaches us that vulnerability, so associated with shame and fear is actually the path towards authenticity, connection, belonging and joy.
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings By Maya Angelou

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

One of the greatest pieces of American autobiographical narrative literature. The book has been hotly debated as to whether it is entirely nonfiction. Regardless, the book is Dr. Angelou’s truth and the truth for countless readers over several generations. It is a story of the inherent power of self acceptance and remains an iconic beacon of hope through difficult times.
Building A Life Worth Living By Dr Marsha Linehan

Building a Life Worth Living by Dr. Marsha Linehan

As a young woman, Dr. Linehan very much did not wish to live. Her experiences with meditation and mindfulness helped her save her own life and shaped her clinical approach, DBT therapy, which I use quite frequently in my own daily practice and with clients.
